What changed The update extends PJM's Maximum Generation Alert and Load Management Alert, originally issued for Oct. 13, to remain in effect through Oct. 14.

PJM Interconnection has extended a Maximum Generation Alert and a Load Management Alert, first issued for Oct. 13, through Oct. 14, and called on demand response for Oct. 13 to serve higher electricity demand from unusually warm fall weather, the grid operator said.2

PJM said it issued the Pre-Emergency Load Management Action on Oct. 13 to serve the afternoon peak and the evening net-load peak, when solar output falls to zero.2 According to PJM, its Demand Response programs pay customers in advance to cut their electricity use at PJM's direction during stressed grid conditions.2

PJM said generation outages were at approximately 61,000 MW on Tuesday.2 As of 2 p.m.2 Tuesday, it forecast load of 112,447 MW for Tuesday and 113,312 MW for Wednesday, and said those figures are subject to change.2

PJM said it will recall all active generation maintenance outage tickets in its region effective noon on Oct. 14.2 It also said it recalled non-firm sales to neighboring systems.2

"Unseasonable weather patterns are providing fewer days to perform important maintenance or construction on the generation and transmission equipment serving our footprint," said Mike Bryson, PJM Sr. Vice President – System Operations.2

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued Order No. 202-26-50 to PJM on Oct. 12 under section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act, after receiving PJM's application on Oct. 11.1 The order is effective from Oct. 13 through Oct. 16.1

According to DOE, the order directs PJM to dispatch specified units as needed to maintain reliability and authorizes it to direct backup generation resources to operate as a last resort before declaring an Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) 3, or during an EEA 3.1 PJM's release said the order allows it to direct data centers and other Large Loads onto backup generation if necessary.2 PJM said it has not had to use Large Load backup generation to date.2

PJM said more emergency procedures may be needed, depending on system conditions.2
