UK government approves 2 GW Sea Link undersea power cable between Suffolk and Kent

— The UK government on Oct 30 approved Sea Link, a 2 GW undersea power connection between Suffolk and Kent developed by National Grid, saying it would help move power from where it is generated to where it is needed.

The link, which runs primarily offshore, will be capable of carrying enough electricity to power the equivalent of 2 million homes, the government said. It said easing pressure on the grid will help reduce the need to pay generators to switch off when the network cannot carry their electricity.

Under a government community benefits scheme delivered by National Grid, community funds in Kent and Suffolk will each receive over $1.34 million (1 million pounds sterling). The government said the money could support local priorities such as improving community facilities, enhancing green spaces and developing local skills. "By rewiring Britain we get homegrown power to where it’s needed, we make sure the grid is resilient for the future and we bring bills down for good," Energy Minister Michael Shanks said.
